Hampden is a small town in the central area of Maine. The community is located south of Bangor on the Penobscot River and is part of the Bangor Metropolitan Statistical area. It is known for its beautiful cottages, dating back to the late 1700s. Hampden is a quaint town with a rich history, a lot of which is still intact today.

The town is surrounded by the Maine Mountains, which provides Hampden with plenty of hiking and skiing opportunities. However, Hampden is also known for its architecture, which blends the old and the new. The main street is lined with antique stores, restaurants, and shops. Hampden is a quaint town with a lot of charm, and it’s a great place to visit for a shopping or lunch break. The main street in town is lined with shops, restaurants, and bars, and there are plenty of outdoor spaces to sit. You can find most necessities in the community, from a cup of coffee to a new pair of shoes. The best part is that many of the businesses in Hampden are locally owned and operated. Hannaford and Wight’s Sporting Goods Co are two well-known stores.


Anglers Restaurant is a casual eatery that serves seafood, fried foods, sandwiches, steak, and other fresh, quality dishes. Kimberly’s at the Marina overlooks the Penobscot River with indoor and outdoor seating and serves fresh, homemade meals with ingredients from local vendors.

 

Things to Do

Hermon Mountain Ski Area is an exciting winter attraction that offers equipment rentals, skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and classes. The Cole Land Transportation Museum collects, preserves, and displays land transportation equipment and military memorabilia so residents can learn about the reshaping of the land, highways, and rail lines that supported the area's development. Bangor-Webster Golf Club is a 27-hole course designed for all players and skill levels. The club also offers Nordic skiing and snowshoeing in the winter with seven miles of trails. Brewer Lake is a beautiful area to fish, hike, boat, and observe different land and water life, like crayfish, mussels, plants, birds, and more.

 

Schools

RSU #22 has seven schools that serve more than 2,000 students in Hampden, Newburgh, Winterport, and Frankfort.
